Obaseki Absent, Aides Mum As South-South PDP Leaders Make Demands In Uyo

Against the background of the recent confrontation between him and Governor Nyesom Wike, Governor Godwin Obaseki was conspicuously absent on Monday as South-South leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP converged to articulate issues affecting the zone.

Attendees at the PDP South-South zonal stakeholders’ meeting were PDP governors from the region, lawmakers, former lawmakers and other notable stakeholders.

However, Governor Obaseki who was recently engaged in a shouting war with Governor Wike over threats to leave the party was not present. Remarkably, the meeting was chaired by Chief Dan Orbih, the PDP South-South chairman who Governor Obaseki and stakeholders associated with him had vainly tried to suspend from the party.

Orbih who has been quiet on the issues raised by Obaseki and those who came with him from the All Progressives Congress, APC did not respond to calls and text messages from GreenWhiteGreen GWG on the absence of his state governor.

Governor Obaseki’s special adviser on media, Crusoe Osagie also did not respond to calls on the absence of the governor at the regional summit.

Present at the meeting were Governors, Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom; Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta); Douye Diri (Bayelsa). 

Other dignitaries in attendance included PDP national vice chairman (South-South), Chief Dan Orbih;  Senator George Sekibo;  House of Reps Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu; former Deputy Speaker House of Reps, Austin Opara;  former governors of Cross River and Rivers states, Senator  Liyel Imoke and Sir Celestine Omehia.

Following articulations from the other four governors at the summit and other summiteers, the PDP South-South leaders resolved as follows:

1          The zone is committed to the enthronement of the federalism in all ramification, both in principle and practice.

2          The zone is worried on the prevalent state of insecurity across the country and calls for more concerted effort in enhancing the operational capacity of security agencies. To this end, the zone reiterates its demand for the creation of state police.

3          The zone frowns at the continuous unlawful violation of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Act by the use of sole administrator in the management and running of the affaire the Commission, and calls on the Federal Government of Nigeria to immediately constitute the governing board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in line with the enabling law.

4          The zone demands that the forensic audit report of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) be made public and implemented fully without further delay.

5          The zone is in full support of the position of the Southern states Governors Forum that the next president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria must come from the south.

6          The zone commends the PDP governors of the South South for putting the zone in world map as hubs of development through various development projects initiated and commissioned regularly.

7          The calls on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to recognize the enormous contribution of the zone to the Nation’s Wealth and extend infrastructural projects to the zone as being carried out and implemented in other zones of the country.

8          The zone is concerned about the none existence of Federal Government Infrastructural Projects in the zone despite its huge contribution to the Nation’s Economy, and calls on the Federal Government to immediately carry out developmental projects in the zone beginning with the urgent and immediate completion of the East West Road.

9          The zone commends the Government of Akwa Ibom State under the leadership of Governor Emmanuel Udom for hosting the submit and making it a memorable event.
