The ‘Jollof Derby’ ended even as the Black Stars of Ghana and the Super Eagles of Nigeria settled for a draw in Kumasi, Ghana. A result that looks in favour of the Nigerians heading into the second leg encounter on Tuesday in Abuja.

The Ghanaians began the game with momentum, starting from their home support as the atmosphere around the stadium was intense.

It was a pretty even affair in the first half with the Black Stars slightly having the edge, creating chances but testing Francis Uzoho on only one occasion. While for Nigeria, chances were few and far between as the first half drew to an end.

The second 45 minutes started with the same tempo as the bouncing home crowd continued to be the 12th man for their team. The Nigerians who before this game had been considered favourites given their strong line-up that included Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze and Kelechi Iheanacho to mention but a few, all who are regulars for their respective European teams.

However, they had little to show for it as they registered just two attempts on target all through the game, with their closest site of goal coming through Moses Simon who was thwarted by the Ghanaian goalkeeper.

A few substitutions by Augustine Eguavoen that included an international debut for Ademola Lookman did not prove enough to turn the fortunes around for Nigeria against Ghana as both teams seemed satisfied to settle for a draw.

Statistically, heading into the second leg tie in Abuja come Tuesday, the ball looks to be in Nigeria’s court as they will rely on their massive home support to fuel their chances of qualifying for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, to make their 4th consecutive World Cup appearance.
