NRC Confirms Train Derailment After Gun Attack

Mr Fidet Okhiria, the Managing Director, Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), has confirmed the derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna train following an attack by bandits on Monday night.

Okhiria however told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that ”information concerning the attack was still sketchy, and no concrete information could be given at the moment.

”We have confirmed the attack, but we cannot give you much information right now.

”From the reports we have gotten, most of the passengers have gone into hiding and the officials on board are yet to give us report of the situation.

”There are reports of gunshots and the train derailed due to the attack,” Okhiria said.

NAN gathered that the train derailment incident happened between Katari and Rijana train stations, en route Kaduna from Abuja, a development that has compounded the security situation in Nigeria.

Earlier, GreenWhiteGreen GWG had reported the attack and that the fate of 970 passengers was uncertain after the terrorists surrounded the train and started shooting.

Some reports alleged that the terrorists immobilised the train after they successfully detonated bombs on the rail track leaving the passengers stranded.

Some news sources said that the attack occurred somewhere between Katari and Rijana. A source disclosed that as the train was stopped that the terrorists completed surrounded the train and were shooting heavily after surrounding the train.
