Delta 2023: Orubebe Says Ijaw Turn Is 2031, Backs Gbagi

In a major blow to the Ijaw campaign to produce the next governor of Delta State, one of the leading Ijaw politicians, Elder Godsday Orubebe, has said that it is the turn of Delta Central to produce the next governor and asked his fellow Ijaw brothers in the race to step aside.

Orubebe, a former minister of Niger Delta Affairs, and before then, Special Adviser to Governor James Ibori said that he dropped his 2015 governorship aspiration because of the pressure from fellow Ijaw who at that time said that it was the turn of Delta North.

Expressing shock that some of those who asked him to drop his aspiration were the ones driving the aspiration for an Ijaw governor of Delta State in 2023, Orubebe said that he would continue to stand on senatorial rotation.

He spoke on Sunday when he received Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi, a governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

“One of the reasons why I wanted to contest in 2015, was that I wanted to bring Delta State to international level but at that time , my people (Ijaw) said it was the turn of Delta North and that I came to scatter the arrangement.

“They (Ijaw leaders) told me it was not the turn of the Ijaw people. After the primaries, I went to thank them for maintaining their position that rotation has come to stay. But today when I say it is the turn of Urhobo people (Delta central) they are saying Orubebe why are you saying so?

“It will be Ijaw’s turn after eight years of Delta Central when the seat will be zoned to Delta South. We are going to prepare some of these young men and women here to take over from you”, he said.

Lauding Orubebe over his assertion, Gbagi said that he was the best prepared and experienced politician among those bidding for the governorship ticket of the PDP.

Gbagi further lauded Orubebe on his patriotism and for standing by the truth.
