34-year-old Karim Benzema yet again showed he ages like fine wine, scoring a hat-trick in a punishing 3-1 Real Madrid victory over Chelsea in their UEFA champions cup quarter final tie at Stamford Bridge. Benzema’s 10th goal in his last four matches put Los Blancos in the driving seat to set up a potential semifinal showdown against fierce rivals Atlético Madrid or Manchester City.

Stamford Bridge was the venue of a shock 4-1 defeat to Brentford at the weekend and the Blues were hoping no hangover would exist against the sterner test of 13-time UEFA Champions League winners Real Madrid.

However, the main man for the visitors was out to write the headlines as he had done in the last round against Paris Saint Germain. The Frenchman opened the scoring with a bullet header from a Vinicius Jr cross and a minute later, he added a second with yet another header to put Madrid firmly in the driving seat.

Chelsea then pulled one back through Kai Havertz, who continued to show why he has been by far their best player this season, sparking hopes of a comeback with that lifeline goal.

Thomas Tuchel’s changes at halftime proved void as his side went 3-1 down within a minute of the restart. Karim Benzema completed a stunning hat-trick to make it back-to-back trebles in two successive knockout games to become only the second player to achieve that feat, helping Los Blancos end a run of six Champions League games without defeat for Chelsea. The Londoners now face a huge uphill task away at the Santiago Bernabeu next week where they need three goals to make it through to the semis.

Here are some takeaways from Benzema’s night of glory in the game that saw Real Madrid edge out Chelsea 3-1;

• Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr have combined for five UEFA Champions League goals this season, the outright most of any duo in the competition this term.

• Karim Benzema has become the first French player to reach 10+ goals in a single campaign in Champions League history and the first to do so in European Cup since Just Fontaine in 1958/59 (also 10).

• Karim Benzema has become the first player ever to score a European hat-trick against Chelsea, with the Frenchman scoring his three goals after just 46 minutes of the game.

• Karim Benzema is the 4th Player in history to score 80+ goals in the Champions League;

– Cristiano Ronaldo : 140

– Lionel Messi : 125

– Robert Lewandowski : 85

– Karim Benzema : 81
