Senator Ehigie Uzamere, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP famed for his unique role in being the first senator from Benin to win a second term, having done so on the platforms of the PDP and the defunct Action Congress, ACN. He reviews the declaration speech of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for the presidency and affirms that his omission of spectacular failures of the Buhari presidency is an insult on Nigerians.

One of the beauties of democracy, is the inalienable right of citizens to free speech. On that score, the speech of Vice President Osinbajo declaring his intention to run for office of president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is within his rights, and well delivered. And there it ends.

The content of the speech, at its best, is an insult on the sensibilities of Nigerians. He must be privy to his principal’s patriotism that has eluded majority of Nigerians. A patriotic president that recognises only his tribe, his own part of the country and his religion? That is not patriotism but ethnic bigotry.

Why Osinbajo’s Declaration Is An Insult

In your speech you promised to tackle security. Something your much touted military general servant couldn’t achieve in 7 years, but rather watched in docility as it deteriorated out of proportion? Religious intolerance is an aspect of insecurity.

You couldn’t utter a word when a member of your Redeemed Church denomination was mindlessly slaughtered for preaching the Word of God in Kubwa, Abuja. You were too scared to even pay her family a condolence visit.

You talked about consolidation of economic gains. The economic gain the masses understand is their ability to afford their basic needs. What are you hoping to consolidate? Increased price of foodstuffs including sachets of pure water, petroleum products, high cost of transportation and medicals? You want to supervise the burial of citizens your 7 years of stewardship with your principal, have strangulated?

You claim you’ve practically been to all nooks and cranies of this our dear nation. You have sat with the poor and you dream our dreams. You must still be in your dream process if for seven years you couldn’t translate your experiences of, and with the masses, to better life for us all. Or you never discussed these your experiences with your principal or he failed to understand?

You and President Mohammadu Buhari promised us “Change” in 2015, “Next Level” in 2019 and you’re coming up with ” Consolidation” in 2023. You want to consolidate your 8 years of atrocities and failures in all spheres of governance? The God we serve is on the throne. God would have great mercy on you if you rather apologised to Nigerians for your ineptitude that has plunged Nigerians into despair.

We pray to God not to reward those that assisted us to prominence with ingratitude. May He grant us wisdom and direction in choosing the next president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
