Real Madrid beat Espanyol 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu courtesy of goals from Rodrygo (brace), Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema as they secured their 35th La Liga title triumph in the club’s illustrious history.

This is now the second league title for Los Blancos in the last three years after winning it in 2019-20 and finishing in 2nd place behind Atlético Madrid last season. This is their second trophy under Carlo Ancelotti this campaign after the Italian had earlier led them to Spanish Super Cup success over Barcelona.

Following a narrow midweek UEFA Champions League defeat to Manchester City, Ancelotti named Karim Benzema and four other starters on the bench for Saturday’s game, but the selected players were more than capable of the job as they swept aside bottom half Espanyol.

First it was Rodrygo with a quick-fire brace in the first half, then Marco Asensio extended the lead before Karim Benzema continued his rich vein of fine goalscoring form putting the icing on the cake after being set up by Vinicius Junior.

Real Madrid continuing their status as the most successful team in Spanish football history as they claimed a 35th league title. They clinched the league triumph with four games to spare, 17 points clear of second placed Sevilla, and 16 clear of fierce rivals Barcelona. After yet another La Liga title, Madrid will pretty much end the season on a high in terms of individual honours as Karim Benzema leads the way in both goalscoring and assist charts.

Here are four records Real Madrid set after winning their 35th La Liga title;

• Real Madrid have won their 35th La Liga title, making them the team with the most league titles in the history of Europe’s top five leagues (surpassing Juventus’ 34 Serie A titles).

• Carlo Ancelotti is the oldest manager to win the La Liga (62 years and 325 days) and the first manager ever to win a league title in each of Europe’s top five leagues;

– Serie A (AC Milan 2003-04)

– English Premier League (Chelsea 2009-10)

– Ligue 1 (Paris Saint Germain 2012-13)

– Bundesliga (Bayern Munich 2016-17)

– La Liga (Real Madrid 2021-22)

• Marcelo is now the outright most successful player in Real Madrid history after winning the La Liga which is his 24th trophy with the club;

6x La Liga

4x Champions League

4x Club World Cup

3x Super Cup

2x Copa Del Rey

5x Spanish Super Cup

• Real Madrid with their 35th La Liga title have now extended their trophy lead over arch rivals Barcelona to two. After claiming the La Liga title Los Blancos now have 92 trophies to their name in contrast to the Catalan giants who have 90.
