Former Vice President and presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar has come under attack by social media users after deleting a post he shared condemning the brutal killing of Deborah Yakubu in Sokoto.

Recall that on Thursday, May 12, news emerged that a female student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, SSSOE, Sokoto was beaten, stoned and thereafter burnt to death.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the victim, identified as Deborah was accused of denigrating Islam after she told fellow students in a students’ study WhatsApp platform to clear the space of religious messages.

Many Nigerians took to their social media handles to condemn the brutal murder as they claimed it was unjustified.

Former Vice-President Atiku was one of the many Nigerians who publicly condemned the act via his official Twitter page.

He wrote: “There can not be a justification for such a gruesome murder. Deborah Yakubu was murdered , and all those behind the death must be brought to justice. My condolences to her family and friends.”

However, a check on his Twitter page hours later revealed that he had deleted the tweet, apparently changing his mind based on pressures from some religious fanatics who were supportive of the killing of Deborah.

The action of the presidential aspirant has stirred numerous reactions by social media users who have taken to their handles to call him out.

Some reactions gathered:

@mrmacaroni: Atiku deleting the tweet condemning the gruesome murder of Deborah shows what we have been preaching this whole election season. Politicians don’t care for the people. They only play to the gallery when seeking for our votes. The people must see beyond these gimmicks…

@firstladyship: Atiku made the first post in English, condemning the barbarism. Then he went to deny it in Hausa, on his Hausa Facebook Page. For him to have denied making that post, he threw the South under the bus. It means the South is of less electoral value to him. We get that loud & clear

@danielregha: Atiku deleted all his posts that condemns the killing of Deborah by muslim bigots; He chose religion over humanity cos he wants to please the north, secure their votes & win the election. It says a lot about what type of person & leader he is. He was only showing fake sympathy.

@shehusky: Atiku Abubakar  deleted his tweet condemning the murder of Deborah In sokoto because Muslims are threatening not to vote for him. His ambition is more important than human life. A vote for Atiku is a vote for islamists. But a vote for Peter Obi is a vote for humanists.

@morris_monye: Atiku was not really sympathetic. Tried to appease the South, saw reaction from the North, deleted

He feels it’s better not to offend the North than offend the South because Southerners are slaves and will vote for him anyways

Our Politicians are the wickedest people on earth

@basil_uka: Atiku deleting the post he made to condemn the sokoto killing is a big red flag.
