Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has deleted a tweet condemning the killing of Deborah Yakubu, the second year student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto.

Atiku had condemned the killing in a tweet that was posted shortly after midnight on Friday but deleted it not long after. The tweet has not been replaced. Rather the tweet was replaced with a tweet that announced the former vice-president’s consultations with stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Minna, Niger State.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Atiku is one of the leading aspirants for the PDP presidential ticket.

The former vice-president has been hailed as one of the liberal Moslems in Northern Nigeria with affiliations across religious boundaries and with Moslem and Christian wives.

The tweet originally posted on the killing of Deborah read thus:

“There can not be a justification for such a gruesome murder. Deborah Yakubu was murdered , and all those behind the death must be brought to justice. My condolences to her family and friends.”

The tweet was made 20 minutes after midnight on Friday, May 13, 2022, but was pulled down and replaced with tweets about his consultations with PDP delegates in Minna, Niger state.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Deborah Yakubu, was stoned to death and burnt by some irate Muslim students, after she asked that a WhatsApp chat forum should not be used for Islamic propagation.

Her killing has been condemned by the Sultanate and the Sokoto State Government has closed down the institution.

Two of the students alleged to have been involved in the killing according to the authorities are in custody.

The move by Atiku in deleting the tweets some say may be to pander to religious extremists despite the condemnation of the killing of Deborah by the mainstream Muslims.
