There is increased anxiety in the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, as the May 23, 2022 date for the primary election to nominate its gubernatorial flagbearer draws closer.

Stakeholders are bothered over the capacity of the candidate who emerges to win the main election given the bad blood that is now flowing among the once united party.

Until recently, eight aspirants were in the race and included Pastor Umo Eno, the preferred successor of the incumbent governor,  Senator Bassey Akpan, Mr. Akan Okon, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke, Mr. Ide Owodiong, Hon. Michael Enyong, a.k.a Baba Ntan, Akan Udofia and James Iniama.

However, one of them Mr. Akan Udofia has reportedly defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to pursue his gubernatorial ambition.

Analysts have expressed the opinion that whoever would emerge as the PDP flagbearer must be someone with wide acceptance of the people and who would be able to match the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the general polls.

It is in that light that some party stakeholders are weighing the chances of Umo Eno winning the main election if as is expected he wins the PDP nomination contest.

The anxiety is connected with the fact that stakeholders say that they don’t want to lose the state to another political party given the assertion that Akwa Ibom is a PDP foothold in the South-South.

One stakeholder who spoke to GreenWhiteGreen GWG in confidence simply said: “It will be bad if Governor Udom fails to produce his successor. However, it all depends on the delegates now. The whole situation is confusing, we are waiting to see how the primary election will go.

“I am one person that believes so much in the PDP, and my prayer is that whoever that will emerge as candidate at the party primary must be sellable because PDP is the party Akwa Ibom people know”
