Chelsea Set Unwanted FA Cup Final Record Following Defeat To Liverpool

Published

Chelsea’s penalty shootout loss to Liverpool in Saturday’s FA Cup final meant that they became the first team in the competition’s history to be defeated in the showpiece event for three years in a row.

Thomas Tuchel’s side fought hard across 120 minutes in a repeat of February’s Carabao Cup final, but once again fell short on the lottery of spot-kicks.

Their loss this season followed their shock defeat to Leicester City in last year’s final played in one of the first games played in front of returning fans following the pandemic.

Under the tutelage of Frank Lampard, Chelsea were defeated 2-1 by Arsenal at the back end of the extended 2019/20 season behind closed doors.

While the Blues are the first team to lose three FA Cup finals in three years, there are several examples of sides losing two on the spin.

In the 20th century, Newcastle United lost in 1998 and 1999, Everton in 1985 and 1986 and Manchester United in 1957 and 1958, while the Magpies were also beaten in three of four finals between 1905 and 1908.

Going even further back, Derby County, West Bromwich Albion and Old Etonians lost successive finals in the 1800s.
