Liverpool, Man U Battle For $100m Rated Benfica Striker Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunez

Uruguay and Benfica forward Darwin Nunez is the subject of a three-way tussle between Liverpool, Man Utd and Newcastle.

The 22-year-old – scorer of 34 goals for Benfica last term – looks set to depart Portugal this summer, and reports suggest that his preferred destination is Anfield, with the Reds possibly ready to break their transfer record to sign the £85m-rated front man.

And if Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool hierarchy do manage to lure Nunez, the reported fee of £85m would surpass the £75m they paid Southampton for Virgil Van Dijk back in 2018. Uruguayan outlet, Record, also suggests that another club – believed to be Manchester United or Newcastle – is prepared to pay more for Nunez, but Liverpool are seen as the front-runners.

Another aspect that would seem to give the deal a boost is that Darwin Nunez is represented by the same agents that look after Liverpool players Fabinho, Diogo Jota and Fabio Carvalho. Nunez, who can play either through the middle or wide left, has made 11 appearances for Uruguay, with two goals and his impressive stats at just 21 years of age is the determining factor to why major European teams are in line for his signature.
