Lawan Faces End To 24-Year NASS Stint, As Senate Ticket Winner Fails To Step Down

After 24 years in the National Assembly, Senate President Ahmad Lawan may be out of thie legislature following his apparent failure to get the winner of the Yobe North All Progressives Congress, APC Senate ticket to step down.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Bashir Machina who won the APC senate primary in which he was the only aspirant with 289 votes has refused to step down for Lawan.

Lawan had left the Senate race and contested for the 2023 presidential ticket of the APC but came fourth in the primary contest that ended last Wednesday.

Efforts to go back to the Senate have, however, been allegedly frustrated by Machina who has refused to step down.

Under the law, the only way for Lawan to stand is for Machina to resign or there is an event of death.

Lawan would be ending his sixth term in the National Assembly next May, having spent two terms in the House of Representatives between 1999 and 2007 and four terms in the Senate between 2007 and now.

A source had alleged that Lawan, working in cahoots with the APC National Vice Chairman, North East, Mustapha Salihu, had sought to  get Machina to step down.

The efforts had as at press time been in vain.

Contacted on the development, Salihu debunked the claims of allegedly trying to coerce Machina to step down.

“I don’t interfere with local party arrangement in states. Yobe has its own unique way of primaries, which is a general consensus.

“All aspirants who obtained the party’s nomination forms nationwide have filled the withdrawal forms, which is a clear consent to withdraw in case of any superior interest, and with the consent of the party stakeholders in the state.

“I’m aware that it is a national party policy for aspirants who lost the presidential ticket to return to their seats in the Senate. You can see Godswill Akpabio has already reclaimed his senatorial ticket,” Mr Salihu added.
