First OBIdient Senator Emerges As APC, PDP Lose Members

Senator Francis Onyewusi representing Imo East became the first senator to turn OBIdient on Wednesday when he defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to Labour Party.

It is the first time a serving senator would join the wave of OBIdients associated with the emergence of Mr Peter Obi as presidential candidate of Labour Party.

Besides Onyewusi, who is a first-timer in the Senate, Senator Haliru Dauda Jika (Bauchi Central) also defected from the All Progressives Congress, APC to the New Nigeria Peoples Prty, NNPP.

Their letters of defection were read on the floor of the Senate during plenary on Wednesday by the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan.

Meanwhile, besides the emergence of the first OBIdient senator at the Senate session, President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated Malam Mohammed Shehu as the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

This is contained in a letter read by the Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan at plenary on Wednesday.

“In accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

“I am pleased to forward for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Mohammed Shehu, as the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

“It is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee in the usual expeditious manner,” Buhari said.
