Senator Peter Nwaoboshi ponders his options out of prison

Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, representing the Delta North Senatorial District has vowed not to stay in prison affirming he would upturn the judgment of the Court of Appeal which on Friday convicted him on money laundering charges.

Senator Nwaoboshi who is also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, was sent to prison following the successful appeal by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC against the High Court judgment which earlier acquitted him of the same charges.

The Lagos High Court had acquitted him on a technicality and failure of the EFCC to produce one of the witnesses to testify.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Nwaoboshi who is also the APC Senatorial candidate is making a bid for a third term in the Senate to equal the spell of Senator Patrick Osakwe who occupied the seat for three terms between 1999 and 2011.

Affirming that he would not go to prison, Senator Nwaoboshi in a statement issued through his media office on Friday night said:

“the attention of SPON Media has been drawn to the news making rounds about the judgement of the Court of Appeal, Lagos over a matter which EFCC filed against  Chief, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, the Senator representing Delta North at the Senate.

“It is not unusual to have judgements that astound the parties, depending on where the pendulum swings.

“The judgement, the news of which is in the media, arose from an appeal by EFCC against the judgment of the Federal High Court, Lagos, which discharged and acquitted Distinguished Senator & Co-Defendants at the trial level.

“Steps are being taken to challenge the Court of Appeal judgment immediately and we are confident that the Supreme Court will subject the judgment to critical review accordingly.”

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the bid by the APC to win the governorship in Delta State has Senator Nwaoboshi as a key factor and the prison sentence if upheld would be a major challenge for the party.
