The Lagos chapter of Labour Party (LP) has countered reports that the former governor of Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode, has joined the party.

The Labour Party chairman, Ifagbemi Awamaridi who is also the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State made this known via a telephone interview on Thursday, where he stated that Mr Ambode is still a dedicated member of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

Recall that news broke on the internet that Mr Ambode, an APC one-term governor, had defected to Labour Party and would contest the 2023 governorship election under the umbrella of the party.

On Thursday, the former Lagos state governor was trending on Twitter after several social media users claimed he had obtained the LP’s guber ticket.

However, Mr Awamaridi noted that he is his party’s flag bearer in the state’s governorship race next year.

An inside source close to the former governor also confirmed that the reports about Ambode’s defection to Labour Party as false.

“He’s a bona fide and committed APC member who will work for the success of the party’s candidate at the state and federal levels,” said the source who spoke on condition of anonymity as Mr Ambode did not authorise him to speak on the matter.
