The Super Falcons of Nigeria qualified for the quarterfinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON against Cameroon after a resounding 4-0 victory against Burundi on Sunday. Goals from Rasheedat Ajibade, Peace Efih and a brace from Uchenna Kanu sealed the deal as they finished second in Group C.

They will now come up against their biggest test yet in the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon, who are more than capable of producing an upset.

Cameroon finished in second place in Group B of the 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday following their 2-0 victory over Tunisia in Casablanca. An early strike by attacker Michaela Abam and a late goal from Ajara Nchout gave the Indomitable Lionesses the win at the Stade Mohammed V.

The victory in the Moroccan city took Cameroon to five points, helping them to progress to the quarter-finals against Nigeria in the WAFCON, which is the women’s flagship football competition in Africa. The Lionesses who have never won the Women Africa Cup of Nations in its history after ending as runners-up on four occasions, are looking to go on and win the prize for the first time this year.

Nigeria who have lost just once in 12 meetings with neighbouring countries will have to win for the 11th time when they come up against Cameroon, as a victory will see them secure qualification for the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

However, Rasheedat Ajibade will be a key figure after the absence of star player Asisat Oshoala due to injury. The Atlético Madrid star already has  two goals and two assists in three matches in this year’s WAFCON tournament, and will for sure be the difference against Cameroon as Nigeria look to win back-to-back matches against the Lionesses after a victory in the semi-final of the last edition in Ghana.
