Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi has explained why he chose not to inform Atiku Abubakar of his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and also subtly rebuffed his former principa’s claim that he would need a miracle to win the presidential election.

Speaking in an interview, Peter Obi also said that Atiku’s claim that he would require a miracle to win the presidential election was consistent with his political trajectory which he said had been laced with miracles.

Obi spoke in an interview on Channels Television anchored by Seun Okinbaloye.

Asked to confirm Atiku’s claim that he did not tell him on his exit plans from the PDP, Obi said:

“When I left the PDP I didn’t tell him and other respected people in my life including my family. There is a time in your life that you take a decision which you consider appropriate for your own future that you just have to do it because you don’t want people to talk you out of it and this I did in the best interest of my future and the best interest of Nigeria

“I rather do the right thing and fail than do the wrong thing and succeed. I took that decision in consideration that it does not in any way inconvenience or affect any other person except me.

While admitting that Atiku remains a respected figure in his estimation, he said:

“That is why respectfully after two or three days I elucidated it in a written message to him that I had to go because of the circumstances I have found myself and what is happening to me and what I thought was appropriate to do and knowing him, he respected my decision.”

On Atiku’s claim that it would require a miracle for him, Obi to win the presidential election, the Labour Party candidate said:

“What strengthens our faith is miracle. Since I started this political journey, my achievements have all been miraculous,” Obi said as he observed that he won the governorship of Anambra within a year of the formation of his former party, APGA, and was inaugurated miraculously. He also described it as a miracle that he was impeached and became the first governor to be recalled. According to him the decision to remove Andy Uba for him to finish his term was also a miracle.

“I ran for governor in a party that was less than one year old, when I started in 2003 and won the election, they declared somebody else, I went to court and everybody said it was impossible, there is no way, it has never happened before but after three years, the court declared me the winner.

“I was sworn in, six months I was impeached alongside Fayose and Dariye, I went to court and again I became the first governor to come back from impeachment. So I was the first governor to win through the court, and first to come back from impeachment.

“And then in 2007, about one year in office, INEC conducted an election and Andy Uba won and was sworn in as governor, I went to court again to seek the interpretation of our constitution that my tenure is four years, everybody said it will never happen but again the Supreme Court declared me the winner which is why you have staggered election in various states today.

“I can go on an on and tell you so many things that have happened in this my journey which can be termed a miracle, and I am looking forward to the next miracle next year to complete the miraculous journey of my political life.”
