Some members of the National Union of Air Transport Employees and other aviation unions on Tuesday joined the ongoing protest of the Nigerian Labour Congress at Ikeja, in Lagos.

The President of the Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers Association, Comrade Abayomi Agoro, while speaking in a telephone interview, said, “Well, my union has not called on us for any strike. The Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria has not directed us on any strike, we are a part of the Trade Union Congress which is the ATSSSAN.

The general secretary of NUATE, Comrade Aba Ocheme said, “Yes, we will be joining the public protest. Other aviation groups that are the NLC affiliates will be joining the protest. There is the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, and then the NUATE, which are all affiliates of the NLC that will be joining the protest. But no aviation cooperation will be affected, all operations will go on normally. Those who are not working will join the march organised by the NLC.”

The aviation sector has been battling with the survival of business due to scarcity and skyrocketing cost of aviation fuel, known as  JetA1. Another challenge rocking the sector is the scarcity of forex.

The nationwide protest was organised by the NLC in solidarity with ASUU over the strike that clocked five months on July 14, 2022.

The Nigeria Labour Congress had last week directed workers in state capitals and Abuja to join the protest.
