Beatrice Ekweremadu Gets Bail, Husband Remains In Custody
Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife erstwhile Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu has been granted bail on stringent conditions by a London court a but her husband with whom she is charged with alleged organ harvesting is to remain in custody.
GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Ekweremadu was arrested after 21 year-old David Nwamini who had allegedly offered to donate a kidney to their ailing daughter turned in to report the couple to British authorities after he was told to return to Nigeria. His return to Nigeria came after medical investigations proved that he could not be a kidney donor.
The Ekweremadus were apprehended in June and have have been in custody after they were denied bail on July 7.
However, it emerged on Monday that the Common Serjeant of London, Richard Marks, granted Beatrice Ekweremadu bail on stringent terms.
Marks, in his ruling said, “The position is that I have granted bail to Beatrice subject to some fairly stringent conditions but I have refused bail to Ike.”
Prosecutors are not appealing the decision, the court heard.
The stringent conditions under which Beatrice Ekweremadu was freed were, however, not made known.
Martin Hicks, QC, who is leading the defence for Ike Ekweremadu said: ‘We deny that there was any exploitation or any intent to do so.
‘The argument will be factual denial.’
The couple are due to appear at the Old Bailey on 4 August.
