New UK PM Appoints Lagos Girl, Kemi Badenoch As International Trade Minister

Liz Truss, the new prime minister of the United Kingdom (UK), has appointed former Lagos girl, Kemi Badenoch as the new secretary of state for international trade and president of the board of trade.

GWG reports that Mrs Badenoch was one of the new prime minister’s rivals for the post of prime minister and finished fourth in the race for new prime minister.

Mrs Badenoch was appointed to her new position following Ms Truss’ return from her own appointment as prime minister by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday.

The prime minister’s office announced Badenoch’s designation as a member of the new cabinet.

Her new appointment is a promotion from her former position as equalities and local government minister.

She takes over from Anne-Marie Trevelyan, who has been appointed as secretary of state for transport.

GWG reports that before she resigned and joined the outrage that brought down Boris Johnson as prime minister, Mrs Badenoch was regarded for her conservative views and sprung a surprise when she took fourth in the race for prime minister last July.

She had also served as a junior minister in the treasury.

Born in south London, Badenoch’s parents are of Nigerian origin, and in her maiden speech in the house of commons, she described herself as “to all intents and purposes a first-generation immigrant”.

Following her birth in the UK she was brought home to Nigeria and spent part of her teenage years in Lagos before she was relocated to the US and then the UK.

GWG reports that as the new UK international trade minister, Badenoch would be expected to breeze through Nigeria which is one of her new country’s leading trading partners in Africa and reminisce with her Lagos roots.
