A gas explosion in Jigawa State’s Babura Local Government Area has maimed scores of people and destroyed several homes and businesses.

On Monday night, September 12, customs officials on border patrol allegedly shot at a tanker, causing it to catch fire.

In a statement issued Tuesday morning, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Jigawa Command, Adamu Shehu, verified the occurrence.

Many residences and shops were burned as a result of the gas explosion, he added, adding that scores were hurt but no deaths had been reported.

“On Monday, 12th September, 2022, at about 2100hrs, a vehicle (Iveco van) laden with filled gas cylinders exploded in Babura LGA,” the spokesman said.

“Many houses and shops burnt. Scores injured but no death recorded at the time of writing this release. The injured are currently receiving medical attention at General Hospital Babura.

“With the intervention of Fire fighters drawn from Hadejia LGA, security personnel and the community, the soaring fire was put under control.

“Circumstances leading to the explosion sketchy. Details will be made available in due course.”

The victims were being treated at General Hospital Babura, according to an NSCDC spokesman.

“Firefighters from Hadejia Local Government Area were deployed to extinguish the fire,” he added.

He said the circumstances behind the incident were still unclear, but that further information will be released soon.
