2023: Is Wike Becoming Irrelevant To Atiku’s Victory?

The task of becoming President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is daunting. Understanding this explains why all of the presidential candidates are likely facing one of the most difficult periods of their political careers.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, running on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, who has about the best chances among the three main contenders, however, has a serious challenge coming from the camp of Governor Nyesom Wike.

If he is to return to Aso Villa, which he left in 2007 as Vice President to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, he must overcome the opposition of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.

While Wike’s challenge appears insignificant at first glance, he’s hydra-headed and will eventually serve as a door – to either Atiku’s victory or defeat if not well handled.

Wike is linked to a slew of other issues, all of which will be addressed in this report.

Why is Wike so enormous? The Rivers State governor not only has supporters in his party, but he also represents the interests of all disgruntled party members. Wike remains the link bridge connecting them all, from the South that was planned out of the 2023 presidential race to the rise of Peter Obi of the Labour Party and romance with the ruling party, among other petty political Lilliputians seeking relevance.

Wike’s cronies also include his counterpart governors and some National Working Committee members (NWC). As a result, it is significant to say that Wike has polarized the conflict.

In a nutshell, Atiku must win this internal battle before marching to the battlefield against his opponents, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidates, Bola Tinubu and Peter Obi, respectively. If he can eventually persuade Wike to join him, he will have won half of the upcoming battles.

However, there are indications that should Wike continue on the path of warfare that Atiku could take the option of carefully ignoring him knowing that over time that many of his supporters would abandon the governor as some are already doing.
