Champions League: Salzburg Holds Chelsea to 1-1 Tie

Red Bull Salzburg  has spoilt Chelsea manager Graham Potter’s first match in charge with a late equalizer in Wednesday’s 1-1 Champions League draw.

When Raheem Sterling put Chelsea ahead early in the second half at Stamford Bridge, Potter was on track for a winning debut.

But the former Brighton manager, who took over from Thomas Tuchel last week, had to settle for a point after Noah Okafor punished sloppy defending in the closing stages.

Chelsea’s performance was largely underwhelming, highlighting the work Potter must do to repair the flaws in Tuchel’s expensively assembled squad.

Tuchel was fired last Wednesday, following Chelsea’s humiliating 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb.

Chelsea now faces a fight to qualify for the knockout stages after taking just one point from their first two Group E matches, with two matches against AC Milan looming.

With Sunday’s Premier League match against Liverpool postponed due to Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, Potter will have to wait until October 1 for his second game, when Chelsea travel to Crystal Palace following the international break.

At the very least, this will give Potter time to settle in after being appointed just 24 hours after Tuchel’s surprise departure, resulting in what the 47-year-old described as a “whirlwind” week as he begins the biggest challenge of his career.

Potter earned widespread acclaim for his outstanding work with Brighton, who achieved their best Premier League finish last season when he led them to ninth place.

However, thriving on a shoestring budget at Brighton is insufficient preparation for the unique demands of managing a club with the ambition of Chelsea.
