PDP Crisis:  Will Ayu Resign?

As the crisis in the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) worsened  with some leaders insisting the national chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu should resign his position,  the question that is pertinent at this time is  will Ayu resign or not?

At the reception held for Atiku on Wednesday in Ibadan, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State re-echoed the call for Ayu to give the party the needed peace by resigning his position as chairman.

He said, “We are asking the National Chairman to step down so that the South will be fully included. That is the message.”

Recall, the crisis in the party started shortly after it conducted its presidential primaries in May and became pronounced when Atiku Abubakar who emerged as the presidential candidate appointed Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State as presidential running mate instead of his counterpart in Rivers State, Governor Nyesom Wike.

Wike  who was among those nominated for the number two position came second in the party’s presidential primary held in May  but Atiku in his own decision decided to choose Okowa. Since then, Wike and his supporters have not shown interest in the party’s preparation for the General Election.

As the negotiation with aggrieved members of the party continues,  Wike and his supporters among others conditions have insisted on the resignation of the national chairman of PDP, Iyorchia Ayu  because both the candidate and the national chairman cannot come from the same north.

Wike   last week declared that Atiku visited him in his Abuja residence after winning the presidential ticket and promised him that Ayu must go so that there would be fairness and equity in the party.

The Rivers State governor who was emotional in his speech challenged the presidential candidate to deny the story.

In an attempt to assuage the feeling of party members from the south, the chairman of Board of Trustees, (BoT), Walid Jibrin last week resigned his position.

But the decision added little or nothing to end the ongoing crisis in the party as Wike and his supporters did not see anything better in the position of BoT which is merely advisory for the people of the south.

As the crisis continues to build up in the PDP, It is not clear whether Atiku, members of National Executive Council (NEC) , and caucus members of the party would prevail on Ayu to resign at this time.

However, as campaigning for the presidential election is set to commence, political pundits are cautioning the party to be careful so as to avoid losing the election.  They believe that whether Ayu resigns or not, what is important for the party is to win the important election slated for February 2023.
