Strike: ASUU Dismisses Resumption Directives by Varsity Authorities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected resumption notices issued by university administrations directing students to attend lectures despite the seven-month strike.

The union declared that its strike would continue indefinitely because those institutions were still under lock and key.

Dr. Chris Piwuna, Vice President of ASUU and former branch chairman at the University of Jos, stated these in an interview.

He was responding to the announcement by Ralph Njoku, Public Relations Officer of Imo State University, Owerri, that the university had withdrawn from the ASUU nationwide strike and had asked its students and staff to return to class on Tuesday, September 20.

According to him, IMSU decided to end the lingering strike in the best interests of the institution’s students and staff.

“Yes. It is true. We have asked students to resume immediately. Lectures start on Tuesday. We are doing this in the best interest of our students and staff. We are not only pulling out of the ASUU strike but also asking everyone to return to school”, he said.

However, Piwuna mocked the universities, claiming that ASUU would not be shaken.

“I don’t know why these people will never learn their lesson,” he said. Is the University’s PRO a member of our union? Is he authorized to speak on behalf of our members? Did we consult with him or his VC (Vice Chancellor) before proceeding? They are unstoppable intruders.

“We’d like to hear from our branch chairperson. Let them not waste our students’ and parents’ time.

“The same thing was said about Gombe State University, Yobe State University, Kaduna State University, and others.” Those establishments are still under lock and key. Our strike will not be broken.

“Our members remain resilient and single-minded about our overall goal to rescue our public Universities from the clutches of the neo-liberal, neo-colonialist.”
