Does Using Plastic Containers, Bottles Cause Cancer?

Published

on

Cancer

Plastics do not cause cancer. This includes drinking from plastic bottles and storing food in plastic containers and bags.

Plastic reduction will have no effect on your cancer risk. However, it may have environmental benefits.

In the United Kingdom, the Food Standards Agency ensures that plastics and other materials used in food and drink are safe.

Some people believed that chemicals found in some plastics, such as bisphenol A (BPA), could enter our food or drink and cause cancer.

Certain chemicals found in plastics have been found to end up in foods and beverages. However, the levels are extremely low and within the range considered safe for humans. This is true even in experiments where plastics are heated for hours on end.

Other studies have suggested that certain chemicals found in certain plastics may cause cancer. However, these experiments use human cells in a lab or animals.

These are very different from how people interact with plastics in their daily lives. They also provide insufficient evidence on the risk of cancer in humans.

In these studies, for example, a large amount of a chemical may be applied directly to one type of cell. This would not occur in the human body.

Many cancer myths have yet to be proven to cause cancer. There are, however, proven causes of cancer and things you can do to lower your risk.
