The rebellion in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP on Wednesday extended to Ondo State after the immediate past governor of the state, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, rejected his appointment into the Presidential Campaign Council of the party in the State.

Mimiko’s rejection of the appointment was based on the decision by him and his group to identify with the Governor Nyesom Wike led tendency that is opposed to the sustenance of Dr Iyorchia Ayu as national chairman.

GWG.NG reports that the Atiku Campaign had, however, built an inroad into Ondo State through Eyitayo Jegede who has been the governorship candidate of the party in the last two election rounds.

Jegede, SAN, a long time associate of Atiku has been able to sustain a section of the party loyal to him and Atiku.

Mimiko the immediate past governor of the state has, however, sought to carve space for himself following his initial exit and return to the party and stoking a rebellion among former adherents who questioned his automatic assumption as leader of the PDP in Ondo State.

Sources on ground in Akure say that the PDP in the state is now sharply divided between Jegede and Mimiko who are acting as agents for Atiku and Wike respectively.

The state leadership of the party had on Tuesday named Mimiko as the leader of the campaign council with Ambassador Roland Omowa named Chairman of the 441-member and Jegede as the Vice Chairman.

Supporters of Mimiko GWG.NG reports had wondered what was meant as leader as they alleged that Jegede had been positioned to remotely guide the council as vice-chairman.

Renouncing his nomination into the PDP presidential campaign council, Mimiko in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Digital Communications, John Paul Akinduro, Mimiko said he was neither consulted by anyone nor consented to his inclusion in any of the State’s PDP Presidential Campaign Council list.

According to him, “Dr Olusegun Mimiko has been inundated with calls and messages from the general public, and his political friends and concerned individuals around the nation; and in particular, his teeming supporters across the length and breadth of Ondo State, seeking clarity on a fake news making the rounds since yesterday that he had ditched Governors Nyesom Wike, Seyi Makinde and their colleagues governors, and abandoned the agitation for regional equity within the PDP; and in particular, making a party member of southern extraction its the national chairman before the 2023 election.

“The report and the list that triggered it, are fake and a deliberate attempt to muddle things up and smear Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

“It must be stated with emphasis that Dr. Mimiko was neither consulted by anyone nor consented to his inclusion in any Ondo state PDP Presidential Campaign Council list.

“For the avoidance of doubt and to set the record straight, Dr Mimiko is unwavering in his commitment to the principle of equity, fairness and justice through which he believes a credible push for a PDP victory is possible.

“He fully subscribes to the agitation by his colleagues and other stakeholders in PDP and the generality of Nigerians that the PDP structure must reflect Nigeria’s diversity, if it genuinely wants to unify a visibly divided country.”

GWG.NG reports that Ondo State is a party that ordinarily should appeal to the PDP on the premise of the rebellion by former governors of the state against Tinubu first fanned by Mimiko and then Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
