The Nasarawa Farmers Stakeholders Forum, NFSF has called on Governor Abdullahi Sule to call authorities and proxies of local government authorities in the state and in Karu Local Government Area in particular to order over their alleged extortionate activities.

The group in a statement issued in Karu, Nasarawa State on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 by its coordinator, Imman Kenazi said the activities of the activities of the agents of the local government were becoming a threat to farmers in Karu and other parts of Nasarawa State. They particularly noted with concern that the much anticipated moves by the governor to woo investors were being dissuaded by the operators on ground.

“We may be small farmers but as a whole we are significant contributors to the economy of Nasarawa State through our poultry farms, and that is why we frown at the activities of revenue collectors who harass us with all kinds of levies which we do not believe go to the right sources.

“At a time when the poultry business is facing unprecedented challenges with many farms closing down, we find it atrocious that government officials using surrogates would want to drive more farms out of business through extortionate fines and other levies.

“The intimidation by local government officials using quasi-government officials to regularly harass farmers in Karu has become noxious and offensive to conducive business operations.

“When agents want to do what we regularly do such as regular fumigation of our farms and impose certificates on us that are hard to get it shows that they are driving businesses away from the local government and the state.

“We call on the governor who has had a bent towards market economy to and the boosting of the local economies to please come to the aid of farmers in Karu and other parts of Nasarawa State,” the forum said in the statement.
