Ortom Apologises Over Comment On Fulani President

Governor Samuel Ortom has apologized over misunderstandings arising from his statement that he would not support the emergence of another Fulani president of Nigeria after eight years of the outgoing president.

GWG.NG reports that the assertion by the Benue governor has been laced with controversy with some accusing him of ethnic profiling.

The Northern Elders Forum on Wednesday joined the fray with a condemnation of the assertions of Governor Ortom against the Fulani as amounting to being divisive and unhelpful in the continuing efforts to build a united nation.

The assertion by Ortom against another Fulani president is believed to be the fulcrum of his opposition to his party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar who is Fulani.

Ortom, however, apologized over the comment on Wednesday when he joined Governor Nyesom Wike led group of governors on a mission to Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi.

Responding to questions from journalists in Bauchi, during the consultation meeting by the ‘G-5 Integrity Group’, Ortom said: “I want to say that the statement people are holding on was not what I meant when I was captured saying that.

“But all the same, I know that it would amount to logical fallacy. I want to say to those who are so offended by my remarks, I am very sorry. I didn’t mean that,” he said.
