Edo PDP: Obaseki Loses As Court Endorses Orbih’s Candidates’ List

The Chief Dan Orbih-led mainstream of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Edo State has again prevailed over the Governor Godwin Obaseki led tendency after a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja declared its list of candidates as the authentic list of candidates to be presented by the party for the 2023 elections.

The declaration was made by Justice Inyang Ekwo of Federal High Court 5, Abuja.

GWG.NG reports that Governor Obaseki with a few elements from the mainstream had sought to take the dominance over the Orbih led mainstream during the recent party primaries for National Assembly and State legislative seats. However, the Obaseki led tendency in the conduct of its primaries did not have the imprimatur of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC which monitored the primaries conducted by the Orbih led mainstream.

Upon the claims that only the primaries monitored by INEC could be considered genuine, the Justice Ekwo court ruled that the commission should only endorse the candidates presented by the Orbih led mainstream.

Justice Ekwo had struck out the preliminary objections raised by Gov. Godwin Obaseki’s faction of the Party for lack of merit.

In the substantive matters, the Justice Ekwo said that all evidences show that the primaries held by the Orbih mainstream in Edo were duly monitored by INEC as organized by the PDP.

Justice Ekwo affirmed that  the Obaseki’s faction had no documented evidence that their primaries were monitored by INEC which is a vital aspect of the New Electoral Act, 2022.

He then made a declaration that INEC must only recognize the candidates produced from the primaries of PDP which they monitored.

GWG.NG reports that the declaration puts candidates endorsed by the Obaseki led tendency including the senators from Edo North and Edo Central in jeopardy.
