The authorities of the Central Bank of Argentina are pondering producing a 1,000 Peso banknote featuring Lionel Messi as part of the efforts to commemorate the football World Cup won by the country last Sunday.

GWG.ng reports that the move could follow earlier steps at important landmarks in the history of the nation.

Commemorative banknotes featuring Diego Maradona were issued after the country won its second World Cup in 1986, who like Lionel Messi captained Argentina to football glory.

According to the Argentine newspaper, El Financiero, the Central Bank of Argentina has been working on proposals to mark the World Cup win with the proposal of issuing a Lionel Messi 1,000 Peso banknote as a major hit.

Mock-ups of the 1,000 peso note have now gone viral with the idea being a major hit among many Argentines.

In 1978, the Argentina Central Bank issued commemorative coins after the country won its first World Cup.

Commemorative coins were similarly issued on the 50th anniversary of the death of Eva Perón, the former popular First Lady of Argentina.

Argentina has won many laurels under national coach, Lionel Scaloni’s reign, having won the 2021 Copa America, the first ever Finalissima at Wembley Stadium and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
