remain healthy harmattan

The harmattan season is often associated with dust, wind, haze and expanded atmospheric dryness causing it that anyone who wants to remain healthy must take some preemptive actions.

It normally happens between November to February or March, especially in the northern part of the country where it is more severe.

Here are actions to be taken for anyone desiring to be healthy during the Harmattan Season.

Wear the right clothes

Wearing the right clothes in the right weather helps to prevent common cold and cough. The saying in some places is that there is no bad weather but bad dressing. Thick and heat absorbable clothes keep heat released from the body trapped inside and limit radiation of heat to the surroundings. Hand gloves and well-covered shoes also provide enough warmth that you need to remain healthy during the harmattan season.

Eat fruits and veggies

These are good sources of vitamins and minerals. They contain a high water content, which help to reduce dehydration caused by the dry air this period. The fruit also helps fight infections and build immunity against a chronic cough and other infections associated with common cold.

Stay hydrated

It is advisable to increase fluid intake at this time to reduce dehydration caused by extreme dryness of the air. Simply ensure you have a bottle of water with you at all times to increase the motility of mucus. Warm drinks like tea or coffee will help provide you with warmth to fight cold.

Avoid antiseptic soaps

During Harmattan season, avoid the use of antiseptic soap because it drys and dehydrates the skin. Use them only when you have a skin infection it is meant to treat. Use it even then for a short period and stop.

Use lip balm

Keeping a lip balm in your pocket, car and handbag for constant applications will keep chapped, dry lips at bay and make your skin to also remain healthy during the harmattan season.
