Plots against Governor Godwin Emefiele’s continued stewardship of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN have moved from framing him as a terrorism financier to claims of fraud and a plot to abduct him and force his resignation.

A group, Coalition of National Interest Defenders, CNID, made the assertions at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.

GWG.ng reports that the group first raised the allegations of the plot it claimed was orchestrated by the Department of State Services, DSS working in cahoots with a prominent presidential candidate and the presiding officer of one of the chambers of the National Assembly.

The plot the group claimed is essentially fired by the cash withdrawal policy which it claimed is injurious to the aspiration of a major political candidate as it inhibits vote buying.

An Abuja Federal High Court has since refused an application by the DSS to arrest Emefiele on the allegations.

Noting that those attacking the CBN governor had not given up and were now changing strategies having failed in the bid to label Emefiele as a terrorism financier, the CIND at the press conference in Abuja said the new strategy included a script to abduct him and force his resignation while incommunicado.

“They are now afraid to talk about terrorism financing and are now bandying allegations of fraud, diversion of funds, diversion of agricultural loans and fraudulent forex transactions.

“The attempt to frame the Central Bank governor with terrorism financing and economic crimes built on baseless conjectures is a direct assault on our nation’s democracy and failed attempts to tarnish the Buhari regime and give it a bad name as a government of terrorists.

“Imagine if the world had woken up with the breaking news and unfabricated stories that our nation’s apex banker has been arrested for trumped up charges of terrorism. The global financial markets would have shut their doors against Nigeria as a rogue terrorism financing nation.

The group wondered why attempts were being made to link Governor Emefiele with those who misused the loans and state governments which mismanaged facilities given them.

On the plot to abduct Emefiele and force his resignation as CBN governor, the CIND said:

“We have heard of the details of the aborted well organized plot to abduct Emefiele and keep him in solitary confinement and force him to resign to pave way for an alleged plot to appoint a top female CBN official from the North or another Southerner as an alternative as CBN governor.”

The group alleged several groups would from next Monday stage demonstrations in foreign embassies and other places to smear the CBN governor. Noting that the DSS was in cahoots with those in the plots against Emefiele, the CIND said that it would follow up on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 with daily demonstrations to support the cash withdrawal policy until the January 31 deadline for the exchange of the old notes.
