Priest Stops Worshippers From Holy Communion Over PVC
Onyinyechukwu Chima
A Catholic priest forbade several of his parishioners from partaking in the Holy Communion, one of the most significant sacraments or beliefs of the church because they had not collected their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) ahead of the forthcoming General Election.
The priest, known only as Rev. Fr. Okonkwo, in one of the Catholic dioceses in Anambra State reportedly informed his parishioners that it is wrong for a citizen to ignore his civic duty as required by law at an early-morning service (Holy Mass) on Tuesday, January 17.
According to reports, the priest invited those who hadn’t gathered their own PVCs to approach the altar.
When they did, the priest instructed them to cease partaking in the Holy Communion until they had obtained their voter registration cards.
The priest further said that anyone who covertly enters his parish to receive Holy Communion or who leaves his parish to do so without first collecting his PVC has committed a deadly sin.
He questioned why Christians should not prepare to elect godly leaders at a time when Nigeria desperately needs decent leadership.
The priest cited Matthew 22:21 to argue that even Jesus Christ was aware of the lawful authority and his civic responsibilities. He exhorted the audience and Christians in general to follow in Christ’s footsteps.
