Five Men Remanded After New Year Day Afigio Accident That Crushed Three Women
Five men have been remanded in Agodi Custodial Centre after they were charged with alleged murder of three women who were crushed to death on New Year day in Akinmorin Town, Afigio Local Government, Area, Oyo State
The five accused who appeared before the Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan on Monday, January 23, 2023, were Oyetunji Omotayo, Akinlabi Michael, Oyetunji Rotimi, Adedokun Mathew, and Wojuala Oluwatosin. They were charged with driving a car to intentionally crush the victims to death.
The incident happened early on Sunday, January 1, 2023, in Akinmorin Town, Afijio Local Government Area, Oyo State.
The five men were accused by the police with three counts that included conspiracy, murder, and obstructing the course of justice.
Omotayo, Michael, Rotimi, and Matthew conspired to commit the crime of murder, according to police prosecutor ASP Adewale Amos, who testified in court.
He said that on January 1 at around 12.45 a.m. in the Akinmorin region of Oyo, the four defendants intentionally caused the death of Olukemi Okeseyin, 60, Amoke Abiodun, 30, and Ayo Muyiwa, 24.
The women were allegedly purposely crushed to death by the accused, who were operating a Toyota Camry with the license plate EKY 14 HP, according to ASP Amos in the accident in Afigio LGA.
Knowing the seriousness of the offense, the fifth defendant, Oluwatosin, attempted to stop the police from apprehending the other accused.
According to Adewale, the offense violated Sections 10 and 316 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000 and was penalized under Sections 319, 519, and 324.
They were ordered to remain in custody at the Agodi after Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Idowu refused to accept their plea of lack of jurisdiction.
The court advised them to stay put until the Oyo State Ministry of Justice provided them with legal counsel.
The matter was then postponed to March 16, 2023, for hearing.
