Kaduna Beggars Reject Old N1,000 Notes

Three beggars along the pop1ular Kano Road in Kaduna rejected the old 1,000 naira note a kind stranger gave them on Wednesday.

The young man was approached by three beggars in wheelchairs as he exited a bus, and when he realized that they were seeking for donations, he pulled a N1,000 bill out of his pocket and extended it toward the beggar who was the oldest of the three.

The beggars, in an amusing response, turned their wheelchairs around, glanced at themselves, and rejected the young man’s offer by moving away from him.

The young man, who introduced himself as Caleb, stated to observers, “They (beggars) came to me, asking for alms. They refused what I had on me despite my offering it to them.

The young man indicated that despite his best attempts, he only possessed the older currency notes and was unable to obtain the newer ones.

However, asides the news about Kaduna beggars refusing to accept old currency, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reiterated that the deadline for exchange of the old Naira notes for new ones remains January 31, 2023, the bank said last weekend. The assertion by the bank came as the new cash withdrawal policy introduced by the bank which restricts amounts anyone can take from over the bank or at ATM. In its official twitter handle @cenbank, on Friday, the apex bank wrote, “The current series of N200, N500 and N1,000 notes remain legal tender until the deadline of January 31, 2023.”
