Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, has caused a stir on social media after claiming that Lagos State belongs to the Portuguese.

The singer argued that the Portuguese had a legitimate claim to the land because they were the first Europeans to establish a trading post in the area.

Kuti’s assertion was met with disbelief and outrage from Nigerians on social media who accused him of promoting colonialism and being ignorant of history.

Some, however, acknowledged the complex history of Lagos and called on the government to do more to acknowledge it.

The debate surrounding the ownership of Lagos State has been ongoing for many years, with various groups making competing claims. However, Kuti’s claims have drawn significant attention due to his fame and influence.

The singer drew his claim from the fact that Lagos was named by the Portuguese. According to him, anyone who names a person or thing owns it. Kuti argued that Lagos is a European satellite slave port, and that all prominent Lagos elites are slavers.

The reaction to Kuti’s claims has been mixed, with some Nigerians calling for a deeper understanding of the city’s history. Others have accused Seun Kuti of being ignorant of the fact that the Portuguese were colonial occupiers who exploited the land and people of Lagos.

He wrote:

“Lagos is no man’s land – wrong.

“Lagos is yoruba land – wrong again.

“Lagos is a European satellite slave port – correct!! you don’t know Lagos!! Hey, ode look here, Lagos is a Portuguese word.

“It is called the slave coast. Learn your history, you no go gree.

“Everyone moved to Lagos to slave!! All prominent Lagos elites are slavers.

“Defend your masters all you want!! Why Ibadan no get Portuguese name? Wetin be the french name of Oshogbo? He who names it owns it.”
