Breaking: Labour Party Set To Win Abia Governorship Battle
Labour Party is set to win its the Abia governorship seat following the presentation of the results of Obingwa Local Government Area in which the major threat to the party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP scored only 9,962 votes.
GWG.ng reports that the votes scored by the PDP was less than the expected 100,000 votes needed to overtake the lead of Labour Party which is 92,000.
The controversy over the governorship election came to fore on Monday when the collation of the results was suspended with 16 of the local governments retrurning their votes. At that point, Labour Party was at the lead with a gap of 92,000 over the PDP. However, controversy arose after it was disclosed that Obingwa, the stronghold of the PDP was set to return an estimated 100,000 votes, a figure that was way above the estimated 27,000 voters accredited by the BVAS for the election in the local government area.
With the result just turned in, all is set for the returning officer to declare the result as she is presently working with other officials on the final result.
Editor’s Note: This report has been updated to correct the fact that Labour Party first won a governorship seat through the courts in 2009.
