Abia governorship election

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC could declare the outcome of the Abia State governorship election by Wednesday evening following the decision to resume the collation of the results from 4.00 p.m.

GWG.ng reports that the collation was suspended on Monday with the Labour Party with an estimated lead of 92,000 votes with results from 1 of the 17 local government areas reporting. The exception is Obingwa LGA.

However, controversy emerged as it was rumoured that Obingwa which had in the past influenced elections in the state with its last-minute returns was returning an estimated 100,000 votes in favour of the PDP.

However, the controversy was stoked by the fact that the local government according to the BVAS report accredited about 26,000 voters in the LGA for the election.

The controversy led to a standoff leading to the declaration of the winner for the polls with many stakeholders within and outside the state calling on the INEC to uphold the sanctity of the votes.

It was gathered that the Returning Officer for the election who is also Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) Professor Nnenna Oti and the State Administrative Secretary, Clement Oha were upon the controversies invited to INEC headquarters in Abuja.

GWG.ng has now gathered that the INEC’s Head of Voter Education and Publicity in Abia State, Rebecca Jim has disclosed that the two officials are on the way back to Abia to finish the business of declaring the returns on the Abia governorship election.
