A man who kidnappend a four-year-old girl, Cleo Smith from her family’s tent at a rural Western Australian campground has been served a 13-year prison term.

The 37-year-old Terence Darrell Kelly was diagnosed with a severe and complicated personality disorder and had used methylamphetamine injections the night he abducted Cleo Smith, a 4-year-old.

After the family discovered that Cleo disappeared in the middle of the night from her tent the family raised an outcry that triggered a lengthy 18-day search for her that made international headlines.

The family had in the morning at the campsite at Quobba Blow Holes, found Cleo missing along with her sleeping bag and the tent’s zip completely open.

The little girl was imprisoned in Kelly’s state-run apartment, where she was kept in a room with a mattress on the floor.

After being detained, Kelly admitted to hitting Cleo Smith for being bossy and demanding chocolate during his police interview after he was apprehended after the tent kidnap. He said that she had cried when left alone and that he had “roughed her up a few times,” but he had not intended to seriously harm her.

Kelly’s acts, according to Western Australia District Court Chief Judge Julie Wager, were “at the highest level of seriousness.”

She claimed that Cleo’s life and the lives of her family had been “permanently impacted” and that this effect would never go away.
