Police re-elected LP Chairman

The embattled national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, on Monday resumed his office amid tight security.

Abure, who was expected to host the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero and his team, arrived at the secretariat at about 12:41pm.

It’s gathered that immediately Abure entered the secretariat, the security operatives attached to him and those manning the place quickly locked the main gate of the party’s building.

Recall that the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, ordered Abure from parading himself as the National Chairman of the party.

He was barred alongside the National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim; the National Treasurer, Oluchi Opara; and the National Organising Secretary, Clement Ojukwu, over alleged forgery.

Justice Hamza Muazu also ordered that the originating processes of the court be served on Abure and others.

The order came a week after a ward in the Edo State chapter of the Labour Party suspended Abure over alleged anti-party activities.

Recall that Lamidi Apapa, the Deputy National Chairman of the Labour Party (south), had last week ursurped the duty of the National Chairman and immediately upturned some of the pending suspensions on some members of the party.

Last week at the party’s HQ in Abuja, the state chairpersons insisted that Abure remains the recognised leader.

Ogbaloi Kelly, chairman, Edo state LP, said members of the Apapa-led faction had been suspended by the party.

“Those who are taking this action are members of the party who have since been suspended, and as at the time they took this action, their suspension had not been lifted,” he said.

“Therefore, we are saying here that the 36 state chairmen have come to retake their possession.

“These miscreants who took over the office do not have the authority to control this matter, but we here have the authority and law to be in charge of the party and we affirm Abure.

“We have come here to tell the world that the action of this faction is a total nullity and should be disregarded because the action does not follow the content of the rules and constitution of the Labour Party.”
