Tinubu under pressure to abandon zoning of Senate President

There were indications on Tuesday that the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu may go for an open contest for the Senate President following pressures on him by the Northwest to pull back on zoning.

GWG.ng reports that senators-elect from the Northwest who have been pushing for the office of Senate President at a meeting on Monday told the president-elect that they would not cede the position to any other geopolitical zone.

The senators-elect from the All Progressives Congress, APC affirmed at that meeting that as the zone that contributed most in votes to the victory of the party that they could not be relegated in the allocation of the top offices in contention.

The agitation of the zone is against the desire of the party leaders and reportedly of Tinubu to zone the office of Senate President to the South.

GWG.ng reports that traditionally, that the section of the country which produces the president had in most cases produced the president of the Senate.

However, the Northwest caucus which is led by Senator Aliyu Wamakoo, is saying that with the President and the Vice-President already in the Southwest and Northeast that it could not be relegated having contributed the highest proportion of votes to the victory of the party in the presidential election.

The permutation it was gathered puts in jeopardy permutations to pair Senator Godswill Akpabio and Barau Jibrin for the Senate president and deputy Senate President.

Even more, the agitators from the Northwest caucus, it was gathered, are also pushing for Senator-Elect, Abdulaziz Yari as against Senator Jibrin.

The determination of the Northwest according to a source may push Tinubu to abandon the quest to zone the office of Senate President and lead to an open contest with all geopolitical zones contending for the office.
