The European Union, on Monday imposed a record fine of $1.3 billion on Meta for transferring European users’ data to the US.

This penalty is the largest since the EU implemented stricter data privacy laws in 2018, and it concludes a decade-long case initiated by Austrian lawyer and privacy activist Max Schrems.

The case was initially filed in 2013 when Schrems raised concerns about Facebook’s handling of his data following Edward Snowden’s leak of classified documents exposing mass surveillance by the US National Security Agency.

The leaked information revealed that Facebook had granted US agencies access to Europeans’ personal data.

While the US lacks comprehensive federal legislation for data privacy, the EU has the Digital Services Act, which requires major tech companies to safeguard European users against hate speech, disinformation, and other harmful online content.
