Edo 2024: Suspense Trails Defection Of Rice Man From PDP
The decision of frontline Peoples Democratic Party, PDP gubernatorial aspirant, Barrister Ken Imansuangbon aka, Rice Man to dump the party ahead of the 2024 election, has further generated suspense on the fate of the party concerning its zoning permutations ahead of the crucial election.
GWG.ng reports that Imansuagbon on Wednesday resigned his membership of the PDP without giving any reason and with it putting the party in a suspense.
In a statement he personally endorsed and copied his Esan South East ward 2 Chairman, the Local Government and State Chairman of the Party, Tony Aziegbemi, Imansuangbon served notice of his departure from the party.
While thanking members and leaders of the PDP, he, however, described his experience as memorable.
“Since 2009 in what was tagged the ‘Ewohimi Declaration’ where I had joined the People’s Democratic Party, PDP has remained a memorable journey for me and I want to thank God almighty for his benevolence.
“The course of my political journey in the PDP had afforded me the opportunity to make great and wonderful friends and had shared great moments with which I will cherish for a lifetime.
“However, the reality of the moment has made it decisive that there comes a time in a man’s life when he has to move ahead.
“Consequently, therefore I hereby tender my resignation of the membership of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP. Once again, I thank the entire leadership and body of the PDP”.
GWG.ng reports that the frontline Edo politician who won the nickname of rice man for his periodic distribution of rice to the populace has severally been a factor in the Edo political landscape since 2007.
Imansuagbon is from Edo Central the only senatorial district yet to produce a governor to serve out a full four-year term. While some political pundits have zeroed in on the Edo Central to produce the next governor of the state the aspiration of some gubernatorial hopefuls from Edo South and Edo North has become an issue.
Political pundits on the ground in Edo State say that one option that may be attractive for the rice man is Labour Party which though without a central leader in the state continues to resonate after its remarkable success in the 2023 General Election in Edo State.
Labour Party in Edo State is believed to have as many as 18 governorship hopefuls and should the rice man join the fray the movement would undeniably further energise the contest in the party and possibly turn the Edo State 2024 contest into a three-way race with the PDP and APC as other major political platforms.
