Diphtheria Outbreak In FCT; One Dead

The FCT administration has verified that a severe diphtheria outbreak has occurred. Out of the eight cases that have been documented, the sickness has already taken the life of a 4-year-old kid.

Sadiq Abdulrahman, the director of the FCT Public Health Department, claimed that the disease had been brought into the FCT from the neighboring Niger State.

He claimed that the Nigerian Center for Disease Control and the National Reference Laboratory both received samples that were gathered as part of the FCT public health department’s emergency reaction. Abdulrahman said the outcome of the result which came last Friday, indicated that there is a positive result out of eight cases.

Through border surveillance, the department is also working with neighboring states to stop the disease’s spread. Residents have been urged to practice good personal hygiene.

Fever, runny nose, and breathing issues are diphtheria symptoms. Sneezing, coughing, droplets, and contact with infected people are all ways it can be spread.

Meanwhile, the news of the diphtheria outbreak in the FCT is coming in the midst of concerns about health spending in Nigeria. A sizeable section of Nigerians believe that spending on health in Nigeria is below acceptable levels.
