In a move that has stirred diverse reactions on social media, Comrade Abasifreke Benson, the President of the Students’ Union at Akwa Ibom State University, has appointed no fewer than 30 aides.

The decision, outlined in a letter signed by the student leader, was justified as necessary to ensure effective and efficient governance.

Among the appointments made by President Benson are key positions such as Chief of Staff, Chief Press Secretary, Chief Security Officer, as well as 8 Special Assistants on media and publicity, among others. While some social media users have commended the President for his all-inclusive approach, others have criticized the move, citing concerns about political culture and financial mismanagement.

One of the critics, prominent human rights lawyer and activist Inibehe Effiong, took to his verified Facebook page to express his disapproval. Effiong described the appointments as reflective of a destructive political culture that has permeated Nigerian higher institutions. He questioned the need for such a large number of aides and raised the absence of advisers on legal matters.

Reacting to Effiong’s post, Facebook user Charles Awuzie echoed the sentiment, attributing Nigeria’s challenges to issues at the grassroots level. Awuzie highlighted the potential for embezzlement of funds and expressed skepticism about the President’s ability to advocate for improved welfare for fellow students while holding numerous appointments.

Similarly, Ado Erhirhi expressed concern for the younger generation, emphasizing the need for urgent help and reorientation arising from the decision of the Students’ Union president to appoint the 30 aides. Erhirhi questioned the purpose of appointing 8 Special Assistants on media and publicity, suggesting it may lead to the promotion of the President’s personal interests rather than focusing on the welfare of the students.

However, not all reactions were critical of the president of the students’ union to appoint numerous aides. General Mark Of Uniuyo supported the President’s decision, considering it a welcome development. He viewed the appointments as an opportunity for all faculties to be represented and encouraged inclusivity within the university’s governance.

Another supporter, Vincent Udeme-Abasi Jonah, perceived the appointments as a chance for the young appointees to gain leadership skills. Jonah believed that if handled responsibly, these positions could provide valuable lessons for the student leaders in the realm of the student union government.
