Governor Godwin Obaseki has described as scandalous his experience of the flood on Benin-Sapele road saying it was unimaginable that the President Bola Tinubu government would not prioritise the repair of federal roads in Edo State.

GWG.ng reports that the governor’s convoy was overwhelmed by the flood on Benin – Sapele Road last Friday after a heavy downpour in Benin-City causing a citizen who shared the video to lampoon that the governor.

But reacting to the development, Governor Obaseki following a meeting of the State’s Security Council at the weekend blamed the federal government for the disrepair of federal roads in the state.

The incident is bound to trigger the resumption of the unfinished political battle of wits between the governor and the president that was ignited at the onset of the Edo governorship election of 2020.

GWG.ng reports that at that time Tinubu had mobilized through a broadcast for the sack of the governor who he labelled a dictator who upended democracy in the state legislature and inflicted pains on the citizens.

Responding at that time, Governor Obaseki vowed to end godfatherism in Edo State and follow on to do same in Lagos.

However, three years after, the battle between both men appear to be taking new shape after the governor was trapped in a flood on Sapele Road, Benin, a federal road for which he blamed the Federal Government.

Without mentioning Tinubu by name, Governor Obaseki while lamenting his Sapele Road experience said that his administration has done everything in its power to appeal to the Federal Government to look into the repairs of the wide span of damaged Federal Roads in Edo State.

Obaseki added that his administration has drawn the attention of the Federal Government to the failed portions of Benin-Auchi Roads, Benin-Sapele Road and the Benin-Lagos Road, particularly the Ovia River Bridge but nothing has been done yet.

According to him, “Look at the incident that happened in Ovia River Bridge three weeks ago, in which we lost several lives following multiple accidents. Nothing has been done till now. This shows they don’t care about us in the State.

“The issue on the Benin-Lagos Road, particularly the Ovia River Crossing is becoming catastrophic. We have lost a lot of lives and done everything to get the Federal Government and the Federal Ministry of Works to work with us and put in place a palliative measure to stop the carnage on that road.”

On Sapele Road, he said: “I was on Sapele Road recently. After the heavy downpour, the road was impassable. What is going on in Benin-Sapele road is scandalous. I don’t think that any region where the oil resources that sustain the Country come from should be neglected. We have done everything possible. We don’t know what to do again to draw the attention of the federal government to these roads.”

Meanwhile, Tinubu’s aides are yet to respond to Obaseki’s diatribe after his Sapele Road experience.
