The long-awaited ministerial list of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been unveiled by the Nigerian Senate, and it has sent shockwaves through the nation’s political landscape with the reawakening of those dubbed as old boys of the PDP being tapped by the president.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio released the list comprising 28 ministerial nominees on Thursday and to the surprise of political observers, many of them were former members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party Tinubu had for most of the Fourth Republic derided sometimes as People Deceive People.

Many of the nominees have a history of holding prominent positions in the PDP, having served as governors or ministers during the PDP’s reign when the party held sway at the national government.

Among the PDP ‘old boys’ who made the list are;

Dave Umadi who was elected governor of Ebonyi State on the platform of the PDP until November 2020, when he formally defected to the All Progressives Congress. Nkeiru Onyejeocha who was first elected in 2007 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, then Nigeria’s ruling party, to represent the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State.

Additionally, John Enoh who represented Cross River Central under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2017 also made the list. Nasir el-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, was a prominent member of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, during the the President Olusegun Obasanjo Government.

Stella Okotete who is listed as the nominee for Delta State was also a stalwart of the PDP in the state and crossed over to the APC after 2015.

Lastly, Nyesome Wike who is the immediate past governor of Rivers State. However, Wike’s designation as a PDP member who worked against his party during the 2023 presidential race did not surprise many people.

The matter of whether Wike will continue to be a PDP member while serving as a minister in the opposing party’s administration or leave the party is still up for debate.

Whatever, President Tinubu may have reinvented old boys and girls of the PDP into his cabinet.
