The Kano State Government has returned the portrait of the 14th emir of Kano, HRH Muhammadu Sanusi II to the Coronation Hall in the Government House, a move that has further fueled speculations of plans by the new government to sack the five emirs that replaced him as emir of Kano.

GWG.ng reports that tension has been gripping the ancient city following speculations that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf plans to sack the Emirs installed by the immediate past governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and in their place return Sanusi as the single emir for the whole of Kano.

Ganduje had while in office first cut down the Kano emirate and divided it into five emirates. The move was in the course of the undisguised hostility between the 14th emir of Kano and Ganduje. The former governor then followed up by deposing Sanusi as emir in 2020.

However, since the emergence of Governor Yusuf who is a protegee of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, who installed Sanusi as emir when he was governor in 2014, there have been speculations of plans by the new government to return the deposed emir.

The speculations gained fuel on Monday after portraits of Sanusi which were removed from the Coronation Hall after he was deposed as the emir of Kano were returned.

However, reacting to the issue in a statement on Monday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, said placing Sanusi’s portrait in the coronation hall was part of its ongoing facelift of the hall.

He added that the portrait of the deposed Emir Sanusi was returned because the hall was built for his presentation of the staff of office after he was crowned as the Emir.

The statement reads, “The history of the coronation hall is synonymous to the 14th emir of Kano Malam Muhammadu Sanusi because it was built for his presentation of staff of office after he was crowned as the emir succeeding late Alhaji Ado Bayero in 2014 during the administration of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

“So traditionally, his picture shall remain there forever. Bringing back the picture of the 14th is part of the ongoing rehabilitation to give the Coronation hall a facelift.”
